Estelle had locked herself in her cabin almost three days ago, and every hour became more terrifying than the last. She could not wrap her head around how she got in this predicament and that made her feel even more powerless.

There was nothing she could do but try and wait for someone to help her, but the ship was far from land and Estelle felt rescue was unlikely. She was stuck in a spot between resourceful survivalist and complacent realist. If only her Arnold hadn't succumbed she might have had more desire to go on.

She turned her head towards the door. More aimless shuffling down the hall. More moaning. At least the screaming seemed to have stopped.

The trouble had begun a week in to the cruise. At first it only hit a few people and recovery was quick. But soon enough it had spread to whole areas of the ship, causing mass movement of passengers trying to avoid being affected. Despite the attempts of the crew, it wasn't long before the whole ship was out of control.

It had an impact on the youths on the ship first and most virulently. There was violence and chaos as teenagers brutally lashed out at anyone and anything around them. Adults were the next to go, their minds unable to cope with the stresses. Last to go were the children and elderly. They had the strongest immunity to this peril, but in the end all passengers were lost in the havoc.

Estelle had done a pretty good job of avoiding the worst of it by staying hidden and quiet. Luckily she had hoarded some food and bottled water so when she was sure her Arnold was a goner she holed herself up to wait. But which would come first – rescue or the end of her supplies?

She closed her eyes and tried to sleep. The constant fear was exhausting. How much more of this could she take? She was old and tired, alone on what should have been a nice relaxing vacation with her Arnold. It had been her idea, but she could not have foreseen the catastrophe that had ravaged the ship.

Estelle was falling asleep when there was banging at her door. Someone stood on the other side. She stopped breathing. Silent and terrified, she froze. Maybe they would just go away.

There was some shuffling, and then...

“Mrs. Richards, lunch will be served in twenty minutes. And an update on the wi-fi. The captain says IT should have it repaired this evening.” The voice shuffled off to the next room.

An exhalation of relief escaped Estelle. For days she had been scared and alone, frightened of the other passengers driven to madness for lack of an Internet connection.

If only her Arnold hadn't succumbed to not being able to play Angry Birds, maybe they would have enjoyed their cruise.

HA! I had already suspected it was something like boredom or the food or the music that had everyone going crazy, but for some reason I didn't expect it to be the Wi-Fi. Omigosh, so clever. Genius.

That is almost the most scary thing I've ever read. In fact, I wonder how all of your characters survived and came out alive even after 3 days of such a torturous predicament?

Nice job!
